Spring and pond Orehovec
The Orehovec spring and pond are located in the immediate vicinity of Krašnji vrh. Water from the spring flows to the surface from a walled rock well with a stone alcove into which the statue of St. Mary of Lourdes is placed. Below the spring is located in a large 5 x 6 m pond. It is supplied directly from the Orehovec spring. The pond and its surroundings are well maintained. There is also a bench with a table nearby.
The pond is supplied by spring water from Orehovec spring. This is not a common occurrence in Bela Krajina. Only about 40% of ponds are supplied in this way. The rest are mostly supplied by rainwater. Today, the spring and pond have lost their importance to the local population - as a source of drinking water, washing, and for livestock. Nonetheless, the pond remains important for maintaining biodiversity. It is home to many interesting animals such as snails, frogs, navels, and many other animal species.
Where to discover
Orehovec spring and pond are located near the village of Krašnji vrh in the municipality of Metlika. When traveling on the Črnomelj – Metlika road driving towards Metlika at the traffic light head straight into the center of Metlika. Drive past the health center on the right and the hotel on the left. About 250 m further from the hotel turn sharply right towards Radovica. Drive straight 1.8 km. At the intersection, on your left, you will see a signpost for Radovica. Turn left. Drive about 5 km straight, through Slamna vas. When you arrive in Radovica, at the cemetery, you will see a signpost on the right for Krašnji vrh. Turn left and drive through Radovica. After about 700 m you will pass by a football court. Drive straight to the village of Krašnji vrh. When you reach Krašnji vrh, after about 250 m turn sharp left and drive 350 m. The Orehovec spring and pond will be on your right.
